As the only cancer center in the world to offer all of the latest radiation therapy technologies under one roof, the Miami Cancer Institute (MCI) is also home to South Florida’s first state-of-the-art Proton Therapy Center. There are highly trained specialists who utilize high-energy proton therapy beams to precisely target and destroy cancer cells while minimizing side effects. Led by Deputy Director and Chief of Radiation Oncology Minesh Mehta, M.D., an internationally recognized expert in radiation oncology, proton therapy, and cancer research, the team collaborates across medical disciplines to provide patients with comprehensive clinical expertise and access to innovative therapies and research. Since 2017 over 2500 patients have been treated with Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT). MCI was the first center in the United States to pair the latest-generation proton delivery platform with pencil beam scanning (PBS). Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, has been granted full accreditation by the ASTRO Accreditation Program for Excellence (APEx®) for a four-year term effective August 10, 2021. This prestigious honor makes us one of only seven radiation oncology facilities in Florida to receive APEx accreditation, and the first and only APEx-accredited proton center in the state. In addition to being a member of the Proton Therapy Academy Network, Miami Cancer Institute offers an extensive education program with accredited online courses, conferences, and symposiums.
